Writing X for Kisses and O for Hugs

People who sign their correspondences with X’s and O's may be unaware of may be unaware of this custom.

The X originated back to very early Christian times when the cross mark of the “X” designated a sworn oath of your word, with or without your full signature.

The cross as we know is a religious symbol and the X is also the first word of the Greek word Xristos which partially translated means Christ or Messiah. People adding the X to their document were swearing an oath to God.

Early on when only the wealthy families were taught how to write and have recognized full names, most documents were signed with an “X”. This “X” was also kissed to seal the oath, similar to the when someone swearing an oath over a holy book, would kiss it the holy book.

The O was added many years later. When men were leaving home on long journeys or to fight in a war, they would hug their wives and lovers with a phrase similar to, “I surround you with my love. Although I leave you now I will return to you the same”.

The holding of a love one was also seen as protecting them, so letters with “O’s” were also signaling that prayers of protection were being sent with their love.

When public displays of affection were unacceptable, and simple gestures of affection such as touching or kissing were prohibited prior to marriage, a simple note with XO’s would remind someone of their admirers’ feelings without disclosing the actual persons identity which would potentially disgrace them.

Today these two letters are used in simple correspondence between friends as a quick gesture of friendship, as well as heartfelt expressions of feelings between couples.

There is powerful energy behind the “X’s” and “O’s”  in any way you use them.
